SPIEL DOCH! 2026 in Dortmund

Record attendance in Dortmund: Spiel Doch! 2026 is bigger than ever. But why are we increasingly drawn to the analog tabletop in such a digital world? A brief expedition report from our visit to Hall 4.

When you work in a film agency, you spend most of your day thinking in terms of stories told at 24 frames per second. We are always looking for the perfect shot, the gripping narrative arc, and the visual aesthetic that captivates the viewer. But what happens when you swap the digital screen for a tactile game board? A visit to the Spiel Doch! 2026 in Dortmund provided an impressive answer.

The fair outdoes itself in 2026

The fair reached a milestone this year. With 18,000 visitors and Hall 4 completely sold out, Spiel Doch! has firmly arrived in the champions league of gaming conventions. Yet, despite the record numbers, the event has retained something that is often missing in the sometimes cold media industry: an almost familial accessibility.

Gaming trends: Interactive storytelling on the rise

As soon as you enter the hall, you feel a unique dynamic. It is a vibrant mix of concentration and pure enthusiasm flowing through the aisles. As an observer from the film world, you instinctively look for the soul of the production here. And you find it. The trends of 2026 clearly show that board games have become more narrative than ever.

A special highlight for us was the booth for Hans im Glück. They were presenting Paleolino – a title we have a very special connection to, as we had the pleasure of producing the official trailer as an agency. It was an exciting feeling to see the visual worlds we created digitally now coming to life on the tables in the hands of players. Titles like this prove that world-building doesn't just work in motion pictures: every game at the table is like a small interactive film where the players themselves act as directors.

Innovations from the designers' workshop

The professionalism in the designers' area was particularly fascinating. You see prototypes here that are so well-thought-out in their mechanics and visual storytelling that you would love to option them for a series adaptation right away. It is this raw, creative core that makes the fair so valuable – even for those outside the industry.

Together at the table: The heart of the fair

Between appointments, there was time for the essentials: playing. The legendary game rental service was once again the heart of the event in 2026. There is something wonderfully decelerating about sitting down at a table with complete strangers and diving into a new world within five minutes. Whether it’s the quick deduction fun of Got Five or the strategic First Giants – the barriers fall immediately.

The Panda Pictures verdict:

What is the takeaway for someone who was there primarily for the film industry? The realization that the analog and the digital are not that far apart after all. Both aim to whisk us away from our everyday lives. Spiel Doch! 2026 was a feast for the senses and a reminder that the best stories often emerge where people sit together at a table. Dortmund has shown: the game is far from over – on the contrary, it is just getting started.
