VFX vs. SFX

Visual effects, or VFX, refer to effects created in post-production, in contrast to special effects, or SFX, which are realized during the shoot itself. Visual effects are used when implementation during filming would be either too complex or impossible. At the same time, the effects are integrated into the film to look as realistic as possible, blending seamlessly with the footage.

Visible and invisible visual effects.

In general, a distinction is made between visible and invisible VFX. Invisible VFX include, for example, green screen shots where the effects are no longer perceived as such in the finished film because the green screen is replaced by another image.

With visible VFX, effects are integrated into the footage so that the result appears cohesive, but the effects remain visible to the audience. This can involve adding rain to a storm sequence or even creating an entire city or landscape using CGI.
