When Helga Landowsky discovers a broken pitcher in an antique shop in Görlitz, near the German-Polish border, she is determined to have it at any cost. But the old lady hasn't reckoned with the shopkeeper, Jakub Lato. Regardless of the price she offers, the dealer doesn't want money for his wares. Instead, he asks for a good story in exchange—her story. And Helga knows how to tell it. It is a tale from the Second World War, a history of pain and loss. As Helga speaks, both she and Jakub realize that this old pitcher connects their lives in a miraculous way, and that they are now, nearly 70 years later, writing the final chapter together. Only then does their story become a truly good one.

It was filmed in the city of Görlitz, a place deeply shaped by this wartime history. The film, shot directly on the German-Polish border, delves deeply into the process of coming to terms with the past. That is exactly what makes these shots so special. Success followed quickly: the film has been honored with countless awards. What makes us particularly proud is the fact that it even qualified for an Academy Award—also known as the Academy Award of Merit, or simply the Oscars—in 2015.
