Underwater Noise
Challenge
The majority of our planet is covered by water—lakes, rivers, oceans, and more. Although most of the ocean remains uncharted territory for us, we have a significant impact on the underwater world. Commercial and private shipping, construction work for oil rigs and wind turbines, seismic airguns for seafloor exploration, and much more generate noise, disrupting the ocean's natural soundscape. This human-made noise interferes with animal sounds used for foraging, communication, and navigation. Noise pollution has enormous consequences, leading to chronic stress in animals and internal injuries that can cause whales and dolphins to lose their hearing, or impair the hearing of fish, which disrupts their coordination within protective schools.
To protect these animals without hindering transport, technology, and research, various approaches are already being implemented: quieter ships and speed restrictions for shipping, the use of bubble curtains during offshore work, alternative anchoring systems, and vibration methods for seafloor exploration. Marine protected areas also provide vital sanctuaries for these animals.

Solution
Despite all these measures, a certain level of noise pollution remains, which we hope can be minimized and eventually eliminated in the near future through a combination of technical solutions and political regulations.
In collaboration with the German Oceanographic Museum , we were honored to shed light on this topic through an explanatory film. Sustainable technologies are becoming increasingly important and should be communicated more effectively to expose existing problems. We at PandaPictures believe that this explanatory film is easy to understand for all generations—and it should be, as the topic is relevant to every age group. The animations and motion graphics in this example explain the effects of noise pollution in a way that is both simple and highly impactful. The additional audio track further reinforces the message and the urgency of the video.
