Challenge

To fully capture the impact of beauty products on film, they must be presented with a sense of luxury and powerful imagery. This is not only challenging during a shoot, but also incredibly exciting. In our product film for the hyaluronic acid serum from the luxury beauty brand KU2 Cosmetics we wanted to showcase the many facets of the product in a visually spectacular way. The product and its promise of soft, delicate skin needed to be palpable.

We achieved this entirely without CGI. All effects were created live on set. To do this, it was essential to have a well-thought-out concept and a detailed storyboard to serve as the foundation for the shoot. For the product presentation, it was vital to keep the visual language both impactful and imaginative. We therefore intentionally played with optical worlds created by the serum. The core story follows a young woman who, through the serum, enters a shimmering golden alternative reality. The serum acts as a gateway to another world defined by mystical colors and smooth, flowing textures. The play with liquids specifically reinforces the impression of young, fresh, and healthy skin.

Solution

To execute all the effects as planned, we pre-tested all mixtures and techniques to create the elegant gold-water effects and make the gold particles dance. During the shoot we relied on impressive slow-motion and macro shots to get the best possible results from the effects. We filmed with two cameras: the Phantom Flex 4K at around 1000 frames per second and the Arri Alexa Mini for unique beauty shots. Beyond the right cameras, one thing was essential: a lot of light. Depending on the setup, we used up to 100,000 watts!

To ensure an ideal workflow between production and Post-production to make this possible, our editor was on-site during the shoot. The main challenge in the editing process was choosing the right rhythm, color grading, and sound design to make the product feel tangible for the audience. This allowed us to create a mystical world that viewers can dive straight into.
